Twenty earnings stocks met Group criteria, and 88 met SUB criteria.

Please Note:
Both of the following are stocks in 130313 PM AMC SUB. Please use care if they should provide trading opportunities. Personally, I usually just delete such stocks. But once in a while the earnings release date seems to drive decisions that induce the desired tradable volatility, even in stocks that have undesired characteristics.

Here's a fascinating study, recently posted to the internet from some researchers in Indonesia. It seems garbled in places. And, I suspect they have difficulty writing in the English language. Basically, they believe that -- in their market -- insiders start moving the price of stocks several days in advance of earnings announcements. They detect this using a simple moving average crossover system. They report profits of about 5% per trade using this method.

Jeff,

Thanks for the apparently useful post.

Guess it was decades ago now (here in U.S. markets), that about thirty days before the earnings release date, stock prices often would start to reflect what the earnings release would result in, in regards to price move. Swing traders could make a bunch of money using this simple thing to watch. Having the apparent "inside" information was not required. Simply watching for the reaction from others apparently using it was all that was required, which in itself was perfectly legal. However, with efforts to identify and prosecute those trading on "inside" information, this technique became less reliable.

Perhaps some other forum members who have traded for a good many years recall this profitable technique.

So hopefully this more modern approach will also prove very profitable. Hope those that try using your posted info will share their results. It will not be long until the new earnings quarter is in full swing.

I may also try it, but my trading time is currently less than desired, and I am already deeply involved in trying to better learn another trading technique. So my analysis of results will likely not be as in-depth as desired.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Jim B.

Has anyone already traded the earnings stocks using RSS2? If so, please share your results.

Likely because of something I do not know, the RSS2 plug-in seems much better in OT than VT.

Thanks in advance,

Jim B.

Attached is a sample of information about expectations for upcoming earnings release. It is being provided this one time just FYI.

Personally, I prefer to just wait and see the reaction to the earnings release. My first choice irt desirability is a gap against the current daily trend because having a bunch of trend followers suddenly trapped on the wrong side of the trade makes for explosive moves that yield big profits. My second choice is a gap from a recent daily consolidation, which also often provides a big, fast move from which to extract big profits in a short time. Both of these setups often provide nice follow-on swing and position trades.

A chart template to aid in evaluating these moves will be attached later after one of my trading computers is turned on (EDIT - An old marked up sample chart was also attached that did not use the referenced chart template, but showed the use of BB bubbles, which is the same when using the PC 2a chart template, and finally an actual example using the PC 2a chart template is included, but comments are fewer than in the other chart example provided). It is only one of a large number of ways to assess these gaps. In the chart template to br proved, basically a gap to outside the Bollinger Bands (BBs) with the opposing BB moving in the opposite direction is the number one best happening. There are nuances such as symmetry in the BBs being desired, and etc. For those who find this approach potentially interesting, reading the book by P. Cahen on Dynamic Technical Analysis might prove of benefit. Elsewhere in this forum, perhaps it was Jim Dean that mentioned the same book. And I may have chimed in that John Bollinger also recommends it. The book was originally written in French, and there may be a few translation glitches (as recalled). Most folks, who have read the book, reportedly liked it. But I have one trading buddy who is at the opposite extreme.

For anyone new to trading these potentially fast, big movers, it is recommended to focus on only one initially. If it proves to not be the biggest mover of the day, so what. Book your profits and continue to trade one play a day until it becomes natural to do, and then try two trades a day, and so on.

It has been hoped that other forum members would share their insights that likely would help us all. Years ago, I shared in this forum much of what I was doing back then to successfully trade these setups. This post may be going back into too much detail as was done years ago. One change in trading technique is that years ago more timeframes were used in assessing the gaps. For several years now, this has been reduced to only two – the lowest timeframe being used (one or two minute), and the daily chart. Gaps to daily resistance, support, or areas of congestion act as valuable decision points about how to play the move.

We all trade differently, and what works for one, does not necessarily work for another. Again, what is working for you is solicited in the form of a forum post.

Using the RSS2 plug-in for these plays seems to have potential. And related experience of others has been solicited. I have only used the RSS2 as a pointer to a setup to evaluate. These pointers and basic candle analysis seem to often high-light my preferred gap and go (aka gap and run) plays. And of course, others might prefer the gap fill plays.

Regards,

Jim B

Hi Jim

Although the way I trade (and help out) is a lot different than you, IMHO the contributions you are making here, and the steady faithfulness that you've shown in doing so, is both highly beneficial and an exemplary community service.

I know from long personal experience how much time giving help can take - and how, at times, it can get a little discouraging not to hear from others. From what I can see, your contributions here are an invaluable part of the VT forum. I hope that those folks who read and apply them will respond with thanks.

Sincerely,

Jim Dean

Jim D,

WOW! Thank you for most kind feedback.

I have wished that more time is available to learn more from you, but our few forum exchanges were superb. It appears our goals are perhaps somewhat similar – helping our fellow traders/investors.

Your approach most likely better fits the desired approach of most forum, and Nirvana Club, members. It appears much more analytical than mine might appear.

You likely know lots more about the RSS2 plug-in than I do, but it seems to offer a tool for others to more easily successfully trade stock moves like often presented in the earnings and gap stocks, thus offering big profits extracted from big moves. Your thoughts about this would be appreciated.

For those who do not have the plug-in, attached are a couple of OT RSS2 charts for two of today’s earnings/gap plays. The RT Adjusted Volume is not included on the charts because of no personal perceived need for its confirmation capability. But hopefully, the attached charts are sufficient to help show the apparent potential to make these types of trades easier for some folks. If so, a thirty day trial might prove interesting ($$$).

Sort of a disclaimer is offered. Although I love some Nirvana products, I have no interest in marketing, or otherwise endorsing, their suite of tools. And no such actions have been discussed with any Nirvana personnel. Of course, such a disclaimer is likely unnecessary because forum members are likely already here for the same reason(s) – including loving (or liking) the tools.

Thanks again, Jim D. Your RSS2 feedback is looked forward to.

Regards,

Jim B.

I did comment earlier on RSS2 in the OT forum. Nutshell - it looks to be a solid offering. Nothing esoteric. The seminar on it is good - explains the ideas well. As you say - I'm pretty analytic and prefer to create my own stuff, so I don't normally use plugin strats out of the box. But the ones in RSS2 look to be clean and well thought out to me. I have not played with them yet - if I did I would probably adapt them some, especially re the exits - but then that (exits) is sort of my thing, and what they offer looks workable as is.

As noted last evening, one of the excellent plays yesterday was CAT, especially on the long side.

The following is a quote from last evening’s eIBD – “Investors dismissed lackluster results from heavy-equipment giant Caterpillar (CAT). The Dow component's Q1 earnings and sales missed views. Caterpillar also lowered its full-year outlook. Yet, the stock rose 3% in heavy volume.”

This is an example of why it is often futile to anticipate how the price is going to move upon release of earnings (and related) information. There are folks that do anticipate the reaction accurately enough that they make decent profits. But why bother when it is easier to just play what you see in the chart.

This essentially sooth saying negative perspective is not in regards to an earlier post by Jeff Mishlove concerning using charts to forecast the likely move. The technique he shared is based on chart reading. And charts do NOT lie. It will be interesting to see how that technique works out in this quarter’s earning season.

Regards,

Jim B.

Here is an interesting article by researchers who work with a data-provider that scans the news and provides machine readable data concerning sentiment of articles.

I am under the impression that JimB's approach works better for him than the results reported in this article. But, then, I gather that many hedge funds and mutual funds are now engaging in high-speed trading based on the news and, even moreso, social network chatter. Look what happened today, in five minutes, as the result of a prank on Twitter. It seems to be the trend of the future.

I know that, on LinkedIn, there are tens of thousands of traders subscribing to various discussion groups related to high-speed, low-latency, algorithmic trading.

Jeff, there is an excellent book just published (and recommended on this forum) title: Dark Pools by Scott Patterson. Excellent read!! Most of this stuff affects day traders and HFT, in my opinion anyone trying to trade one minute bars or even 5 minute bars will be affected. I am a swing trader holding over nite and sometimes 4+ weeks, so HFT manipulation does affect my style but not as much as one minute traders.

So, I'll say it again as part of my 'annual review' of this thread - NICE WORK JIM !!!! LoL!
