Since it has been about eleven months since an earnings map/profile was posted, and the new earnings season (quarter) started tonight when AA released its earnings information, an earnings map/profile for this week is attached, just FYI - 14 earnings stocks met Group criteria, and 14 met SUB criteria.

As stated elsewhere over the years, the earnings announcements often offer some excellent day trades, and also can lead into excellent longer term trades.

Regards,

Jim B.

Jeff, thanks for the feedback that is likely too kind.

For day trading, to supplement the earnings info, market conditions are assessed and stocks that have price gaps since their close the prior day are identified - below is a sample of today’s pre market preparation. Post times (within brackets) are in CDT (US Markets open at 8:30am) (my time zone). Times referenced within the posts are in EDT (US market times - markets open at 9:30am), to avoid confusion when sharing info with trading buddies in other time zones.

FYI - For this week, 143 earnings stocks met Group criteria, and 82 met SUB criteria.

These earnings maps/profiles are made each Friday during the entire year. The earnings stocks combined with gap stocks most always provide some decent trades every day.

Marc,

Thank you for such kind feedback.

It is hoped that at least some additional forum members will figure out how to benefit from the opportunities offered at earnings release.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, earnings (and gap) stocks also often provide some excellent longer term trades. And my favorites are the ones which provide big moves from which to extract big profits.

The basic system used for trading earnings and gap stocks was started in mid 2004. It was used with TradeStation until about mid 2006. That was when VT was tested and found to, at least for me, work better. Also Nirvana has been great at incorporating changes over the years that made VT even better for these types of trades.

It is noted that this earnings season is giving a below average number of excellent to outstanding day trades. But there are still decent profits offered most every day. And it seems that most trading systems (and etc.) are currently yielding lower profits than usual.

FYI - the attached map contains 332 earnings stocks that met Group criteria.

Another FYI - the SUB criteria earnings stocks also give some excellent plays, but they usually are not included in the VT map when there are sufficient stocks that meet Group criteria.

Regards,

Jim B.

Jim,

So sorry for the month delayed response. I was away for most of July and August.. SO just getting back into the swing of things now..

The systems that you use sounds so simple. And, the fact that you been doing this for a couple years just goes to show how something simple, yet perfected can go a long way.

Do you feel that during earnings release that there are more prospects for Long term gains or short term gains? ie, is it better to day trade earnings, swing trade or hold them for a longer period of time during earnings releases?

I see you doing this every week.. I actually never knew that earnings releases were announced that often. I know some of the symbols are the same and what not.. but I thought the majority would be announced at quarter end. Learned alot just from that alone and the importance of these announcements.

Marc,

My method of trading the market open actually was discussed in detail in VT forum thread http://www.visualtrader.com/visualtrader/forum/thread-view.asp?threadid=357 , starting with post # 1604 made on 5/20.2007.

I usually do not share my pre market assessments for individual stocks with trading buddies because they (assessments) perhaps offer little utility to trading buddies since we all trade in different ways. One exception was made on 7/17/2012, and at least some of my analysis results are captured in Skype Group chat which is attached. As you said, the technique consists of simple things - like chart reading skills, mainly looking at least at two timeframes. For some time now, mainly the two minute and daily timeframes are normally all that is required to find excellent trade opportunities. For years, four timeframes were used, with emphasis on the two minute, 60 minute, and daily timeframes. Sometimes it is still a good idea to look at the 60 minute timeframe to see areas of recent (last five day’s) intraday congestion, support, resistance, highs, lows, etc.

I have worked on making my market open trading technique more simple for at least six years now. The switch from TradeStation to VT in 2006 was one of those efforts to simplify

Another trading buddy who was present but not making comments that recent July day was nice enough to capture some annotated screen shots related to the posted analysis. Extracts from his good work are also attached in a Power Point attachment.

Another attachment shows daily chart thumbnails for stocks mentioned in the 7/17/1212 chat. These may be used to see how at least these stocks acted for some time after that day for those assessing whether to look for candidates for longer timeframe trades. These thumbnail charts also complement the info presented in the Power Point attachment. As indicated in the attachment, the $ sign represents earnings announcements, which occur every quarter. Hence there are usually two announcements on each of the six month thumbnail charts. Please also note that only normal market hours are displayed in these charts – so a reference to a pre market price may not be seen if there was retracement prior to market open.

Please note that the one day selected is representative of every trading day – it was simply one that was better documented than most others. As may be obvious, it is hard to have a losing day with these trades after some minimal amount of proficiency is developed. Another trading buddy and I had more than a year without a losing day. Please note that we did indeed have some losing trades, but each, and every day, winning trades more than offset these (small) losses.

Over the years it seems that most folks that tried these trades without success did not do all of the things required (at least for me). One biggee is use of pre market (or extended hour) data to make assessments of likely events to follow after the markets open. Even after Nirvana developed the means to toggle extended hours data off and on, there has been resistance for some others to use the feature. But as stated earlier, we all trade differently, and some are having success with no use of pre market data. However, it is strongly recommended that other newcomers to this type of trading use the extended hour’s information – it helps give you a significant edge over other traders (IMHO).

When first learning how to trade, I was taught to avoid trading the first hour after the markets opened. That was amateur hour for those wanting to lose their money. Using the simple techniques (as shown in this post and in the referenced thread) which have likely already been mastered by many traders/forum members, it makes the first hour of trading the best time to trade on most trading days. Plus it is very nice to trade until an hour or two after market open, and then do whatever you want the rest of the day. However, these same stocks often offer decent moves later in the day for those desiring more profits – if near the computer I usually set alarms and go about other things (like studying trading materials).

Marc, you are also correct that between the earnings stocks (even when there are few) and gap stocks, there are decent trades most every day of the year. And earnings are just so important to a stock’s price action. As may be known, Zacks uses earnings revisions as the basis for their stock advice. The Investors Business Daily has earnings in two of the letters in its acronym for their trading technique (CAN SLIM). C is current earnings, and A is annual earnings.

With all that said, day trading is not for everyone. Also as stated elsewhere in this forum, I never had aspiration to day trade, and was totally surprised at how much I love it. Hope at least some others give it a try, and find they also like it. In addition, others may only be interested in using the earnings information to prospect for longer timeframe trades. We each have to find what trading techniques fit us.

Well this note became a little long. Hope it proves of interest to at least some, including you, Marc.

Regards,

Jim B.

Edit - problems are being experienced in uploading attachments - will try again later.

Jim,

Wow! Thanks.

That link you included with in the thread does read very familiar as I'm somewhat sure I've read it in the past. Just sounds familiar that's all. Or, as I'm also sure you've probably gone over your method with me in the past too as being a member of this forum for quite some time.

Your value is unsurpassed. I hope I'm saying that correctly. Not to many Nirvana users are willing to open up too much as to how they trade. More or less, I just pay attention to your threads and posts.. they are valuable.
I do have future plans to re-enter the stock market once I get more capital to begin saving and starting my own IRA fund thru my broker. Right now, I still just trade Forex which I'm very comfortable with doing.

It's important for a novice, and even a well seasoned trader to take notice of what others say and how they trade. It's impossible to nearly mimic an identical method of someone else. It just can't be done as everyone trades differently. Exactly what you said. I think that's the biggest rule of thumb is taking what you hear from other people and apply it as your own, in your own way. (as there really is no other way, LoL). And, lessons learned. Your organization and follow through is something all in here should pay attention too. You post your attachments weekly, without fail. Goes to show your persistence and competence to a well thought out system. Sticking with what works!!! The lesson I learned from that is to pay attention to announcements in the Forex Markets. Pay attention to Unemployment figures, Interest Rate increases or decreases, Consumer sentiment, GDP, etc.. and not just here in the U.S. but abroad, throughout the world and all relevant currencies.

We've all heard the importance of news playing a key role in the movement of any type of financial instrument and how it can effect your trade(s). Forex or Stocks are no different. Anyways, I just set up my own alert system, a calendar if you will to pay attention on any potential announcement, particular interest rates increases or decreases. So, I try and take what I learn from you and others and apply it elsewhere.

I also read a book on intermarket analysis - which I'm pretty sure I mentioned in here before "Currency Trading and Intermarket Analysis". Just gives a good analysis of how to pay attention to coorelating Markets and securities, follow the news, announcements, etc. Ie Gold and FX, Bonds and Stocks, etc.. Just one of the many good books I've read.

I'm inconsistently profitable but like you, I have a passion, a very deep passion for trading b/c its something I did. I can say "I learned this stuff on my own time with no help from anyone else". Of course though, people did give me help along the way but I did most of it. it's a very rewarding feeling!! The biggest issues I face are errors within OT/VT(tho I experience fewer in VT than in OT), and inconsistencies on my behalf by not following through.. But, I still go at it every week, almost every day.

FYI - I can't open that attachment?
"120901 - Tuesday, July 17, 2012 ??? VT Group chat extracts.doc"
When I try and open it, it says its saved as an ".asp" file. Unsure of what .ASP is. Anyways, THANKS A BUNCH for your insight!!!!!

Thanks,
Marc

Please add PNY to earnings list/profile/map - it is IDed as 100910 TNS (Time Not Specified) and also as 120912 TNS - reality is TBD.
PNY is a SUB (Vol) stk.

PNY appeared in the ibd earning stocks list - the ibd list was available only after the earnings map had been sent out/posted.

One of the decent day trades for today provides an example of how earnings stocks can evolve into decent trades in other timeframes. The two minute intraday and daily charts are attached. An additional post is a chart that shows the July earning release by a $ sign. Related chat extracts are also posted.

Noted on the daily chart is that there is about a twenty-three week cup that runs into the earnings date, and thereafter a handle is formed that leads to today’s break through a $164.10 buy point. If using the ibd rule to not purchase a stock more than 5% beyond the ideal buy point, PNRA is still in a buying range until about $169.10. PNRA closed at $166.53 today, and is currently unchanged in after hours trading.

The fundamentals are less than desirable, but stocks coming out of a base often are like this. The biggest negative to me is that the industry is a laggard by most standards.

So a July earnings stock, PNRA, provided decent trades during the market open today, and offered a couple of other decent trades later in the day. It also has a nice setup for both swing and position trades IMHO.

This post is NOT a trade recommendation. Each trader should use their established system to evaluate if a particular trade is suitable for them.

But PNRA does provide a good example of what has been stated earlier in this thread in respect to how tracking earnings stocks can lead to decent trades in longer timeframes., as mentioned at the beginning of this post. Also shown is how stocks that trade well during the first hour after market open often offer decent trades later on that same day.

Hope this post proves of interest to at least some forum members.

Regards,

Jim B.

Update to post 6932, above.

Noted is that I inadvertently made an error in last evening’s PNRA analysis. Only the industry numerical rating was looked at, which lead to a fairly big negative in considering the PNRA bullish trade. Looking at the actual chart for PNRA’s industry tells a more optimistic story, as shown in the attachment.

It has several days above the upper Bollinger Band, a bullish situation. However, it is into resistance on the daily chart, and indicators appear to potentially be rolling over. So yes, the chart shows conflicted information. But it is surely a more pleasing (bullish) picture than painted by only the industry numerical rating.
